Book Review by Jean Christensen
Surviving Cold and Flu Season Naturally by Faith A. Christensen, ND, RN
Based on her years of helping patients through the cold and flu season, Dr. Christensen condenses, summarizes and highlights practical steps anyone can take to recover from the common cold or flu—or prevent coming down with it in the first place. Though just under 200 pages (including a Research appendix), Surviving Cold and Flu Season Naturally covers prevention tips, natural treatments, special considerations for all age groups, delicious recipes and when to check with your doctor.
If you have the luxury of a naturopathic physician close by, lucky you! This book will be the perfect reminder and reference during cold and flu season. You can bring it along to ask questions or start a conversation about you and/or your family’s health. If you don’t have access to a naturopathic doctor, take heart. This book is a great introduction to the safe, time-tested principles of natural healing which you can try right away. And it has great references for further research.
I know, as a mother, this kind of book description can make you very tired. The last thing you need or want when you have a house full of sick people is something else to do. And the thought of starting or changing to a new routine just seems too hard. Where to begin? And, of all the things you could change, which one is the most helpful when you can only afford time or money for one? And what if you don’t even have time to read a short book?
I’ve found the real value of Dr. Christensen’s book is you can read it straight through or turn to the index or table of contents to use it as a quick reference. For example:
-Need a quick intro or reminder about why antibiotics are NOT the answer to colds and flu? Scan pages 2 and 3.
-Is flu like a revolving door at your house? Find 10 possible reasons why on page 17.
-Wondering if organic produce really matters? See pages 46-48.
-Need ideas to get your kids (or yourself) to eat healthy food? Check out page 62-63.
-Ready to try herbal remedies from the health food store, but not sure how to start? Chapter 6 is a great introduction.
-The recipes in Chapter 9 are worth the price of the book alone. Even if you make only one, it’s a delicious start.
-Even if you never have time to read the book until you’re actually sick, the 10 short pages in Chapter 7 offer what to do right when you’re coming down with something.
-And you can take heart knowing the superb job your immune system is doing, given half a chance, to fight off infections. It’s all in Chapter 2.
If you’re looking for pictures or graphics, this book has none–but its slim 5 x 8 size makes it easy to use and carry around. If you’re feeling the need to take control during cold and flu season, this book is a great way to start.
